He began his Civil Engineering studies at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in the academic year 1989/1990. During his studies, he worked as a part-time computer analyst and programmer at UPS in 1993 and as a computer monitor at CIDEC-IST between 1993 and 1995. In early 1995, he joined Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners, Lda, contributing to the Fertagus railway project, which connects the south of the Tagus River and the expanded track in the north of the Tagus (now the railway line crossing the 25 de Abril Bridge). In September 1997, he enrolled in a Master’s in Structural Engineering at IST, completing it in 2000 with a thesis titled “Stress Finite Elements.” In 2005, he began his PhD at IST, earning his degree in 2010 with a thesis on “Adaptive Stress Field Models.” Since 1998, he has collaborated with JSJ Consultoria e Projectos de Engenharia, Lda, specializing in structural engineering, becoming a partner in 2005. Over his career, he has developed numerous structural projects of varying sizes and complexities, contributed to three fib bulletins through working groups, and authored several papers presented at national and international scientific conferences. In 2008, he received the Ferry Borges Prize for the best article in Portuguese. He teaches multiple structural engineering courses and is currently an Invited Assistant Professor at IPS and IST, managing partner at JSJ, and convener of fib WP224, where he recently published fib Bulletin 100, “Design and Assessment with Strut-and-Tie Models and Stress Fields: from Simple Calculations to Detailed Numerical Analysis.”
