João Firmo holds a PhD in Civil Engineering (2015) from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon and currently he is Assistant Professor at the Civil Engineering Department of IST, where he teaches courses related to the design of reinforced concrete structures. João Firmo conducts research at the research unit CERIS of IST on different uses of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials/systems in civil infrastructures, namely (i) advanced strengthening systems for existing reinforced concrete structures, (ii) concrete elements internally reinforced with FRP bars and (iii) FRP composite panels for both rehabilitation and new construction, focusing his research activities mostly on the behaviour of those structures/systems under exposure to elevated service temperatures or fire. João Firmo has participation in 10 research projects (total funding of 4,452,134.96€), being the Principal Investigator of one project about the fire behaviour of FRP panels for the rehabilitation of building floors (concluded in 2022). He is/was supervisor or co-supervisor of 5 PhD theses (3 concluded, 2 to be concluded in 2024) and 2 ongoing and 17 concluded MSc dissertations developed in IST or in collaboration with foreign universities. His research outputs include 36 papers in international journals (mostly SCI-Q1, some in collaboration with international leading researchers), 7 papers in national journals, 67 papers in conferences, receiving a total of 1270/974 citations and having a h-index of 20/19 (Google Scholar/Scopus metrics up to 02/02/2024). He has also collaborated in advanced consultancy studies in different domains, including inspections of fire-damaged structures and experimental characterization of different materials/systems exposed to elevated temperatures or fire. João Firmo is a member of the following technical committees: (i) Working Group 4 of CEN/TC250 – FRP Structures, (ii) CT 115 – CEN/TC 250/SC 2 – Eurocode 2: Design of concrete structures and (iii) Working Group for Fire Safety of CT 115 – CEN/TC 250/SC 2.
