Assistant Professor at IST-UL

Carlos Manuel Tiago Tavares Fernandes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon, specializing in Structural Mechanics and Engineering. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (IST, 1996), a Master’s in Structural Engineering (IST, 1999), and a PhD in Civil Engineering (IST, 2007). Between 1998 and 2002, he served as an assistant lecturer at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, where he taught courses in Finite Element Methods, Applied Mechanics, and Structural Theory. Later, in 2002-2003, he taught Structural Analysis at IST’s Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture.

His academic focus encompasses reinforced concrete and steel structure analysis, as well as material performance under extreme conditions. Professor Fernandes has extensive experience teaching courses in Structural Analysis and Computational Mechanics, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate programs. His research is aimed at enhancing structural resilience and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on modeling techniques and material durability under stress. Widely published, he actively collaborates on projects with research units and industry partners, advancing initiatives for infrastructure resilience and resource-efficient construction.
