Co-Principal Investigator

André Furtado is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Environment at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) since 2022. He completed his PhD at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto, in 2020, focusing on the seismic behaviour of reinforced concrete structures and their interaction with masonry infill walls. He is an expert in assessing the seismic vulnerability of structures and in seismic strengthening of masonry infill walls, both in new constructions and in the retrofitting of existing buildings.

André Furtado has participated in 12 research projects (with a total funding of approximately €5.3M) and is the Principal Investigator of two research projects focusing on the combined seismic and energy retrofitting of buildings. He has supervised or co-supervised 6 ongoing PhD theses and 33 master’s dissertations (26 of which have been completed), developed at IST or in collaboration with other Portuguese universities.

He is the co-author of 2 books, 9 book chapters, 71 articles in international journals (mostly SCI-Q1), 9 articles in national journals, and 92 papers presented at national and international conferences. He has an h-index of 25 on the Scopus database. Furthermore, he was included in Stanford University’s “World’s Top 2% Scientists” list in the ‘Single Year’ category for both 2021 and 2023. Among his honours, he received the Carlos Sousa Oliveira Award in 2019 and the Applied Sciences Young Investigator Award in 2024.

He has authored over 30 technical reports diagnosing buildings and is a member of the editorial boards of several international scientific journals. Additionally, he is a member of the FIB Activity groups 2.7 and 10.3 and served as Secretary of the FIB Young Members Group in 2023. He also coordinated the organizing committee for the ECCOMAS Young Investigators Conference in 2023.
