The R2UTechnologies Innovation Pact | modular systems, led by DOMINGOS DA SILVA TEIXEIRA S.A., is driving a revolution in Portugal’s construction industry. Launched in January 2022 and set to last four years, this Innovation Pact involves a €177 million investment, aimed at industrializing Modular Construction in Portugal, strengthening the national economy, and boosting efficiency and sustainability in the sector by replacing traditional methods with more innovative and efficient approaches.
Through the collective efforts of a consortium of 29 companies and 18 scientific and technological entities, the project will deliver 18 innovative Products, Processes, and Services, which include:
- New materials and innovative products (such as facade systems, glass surfaces, and bathroom solutions),
- Digital transformation solutions applicable across all phases of modular construction, and
- A Multidisciplinary Curriculum focused on Modular Construction
These results will be tangibly demonstrated in a 4,000-square-meter Living Lab with 80 customized modular housing units. This space will serve as a hub for innovation and learning, dedicated to showcasing and promoting the new solutions developed, providing an immersive, hands-on environment to explore the benefits of modular construction and its future applications.
Through the execution of the R2UTechnologies Innovation Pact, approximately 584 direct jobs are expected to be created, with half of these positions being highly skilled. Additionally, a 20% increase in renewable energy use and a 30% increase in recycled/reused materials in construction production processes are anticipated. These measures will not only contribute to a 25% reduction in GHG emissions but will also strengthen the circular economy and encourage more sustainable practices within the construction industry.
