R2U Technologies at COMPDYN 2025: Advancing Seismic Resilience in Prefabricated Systems

The R2U Technologies project was featured at the COMPDYN 2025 – 10th ECCOMAS Thematic Conference on Computational Methods in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering, held from 15–18 June on Rhodes Island, Greece. The conference is one of the most important European events in seismic engineering and computational structural dynamics, bringing together researchers and practitioners from around the world.

The paper, titled “Numerical Modelling of Connections for Insulated Precast Concrete Walls”, was presented by Alexia Ribeiro and co-authored by researchers from Instituto Superior TécnicoISECUniversidade de AveiroLinnaeus University (Sweden), and the industrial partner Vigobloco.

In response to growing demands for energy-efficient and earthquake-resilient buildings, this research explores an innovative use of insulated precast concrete walls not only as non-structural but also as load-bearing components. The study focuses on the vertical bolted connections between these wall panels — a critical aspect for ensuring mechanical performance and seismic safety.

The team developed finite element models using ABAQUS, calibrated with experimental tests under monotonic and cyclic loading. A parametric study was then conducted to assess the influence of concrete strength, rebar diameter, and bolt diameter on the connection’s structural behavior. The results provide design insights to enhance both dissipative capacity and structural robustness, promoting solutions aligned with the principles of demountability and reuse in modular construction.

Participation in COMPDYN 2025 underlines the scientific and practical relevance of the R2U Technologies project in shaping the future of sustainable, modular, and seismic-resistant construction in Europe and beyond.
